El Monasterio de San Lorenzo fue construido entre 1563 y 1584 por orden de Felipe II de Austria en El Escorial (Madrid). El edificio pretendía representar la supremacía del poder hispánico en manos de los Austrias. Eran tiempos en los que España se alzaba como una de las más importantes potencias internacionales, extendiendo su poder hasta el casi recién descubierto Nuevo Mundo. Por ello, Felipe II ordenó la construcción de este imperial edificio cuyos enigmas comenzarían incluso antes de su propia construcción.
El primero de ellos fue el lugar. Se dice que para elegir la localización exacta de construcción, los encargados por el rey para tal menester optaron por una zona caracterizada por ser foco de atracción de tormentas y relámpagos.
El segundo enigma fue el concerniente a la leyenda del perro negro. Se dice que durante el tiempo de construcción del edificio, numerosos testigos observaron un perro negro deambular por la zona. El monarca, ferviente supersticioso, ordenó matar al animal. Otra leyenda afirma que antes de fallecer, el monarca mencionó al perro negro en sus últimas palabras.
El tercer enigma es el relativo a las fechas. La última piedra del monasterio se colocó un 13 de septiembre. Sería otro 13 de septiembre el día que moriría Felipe II de Austria.
Y por último, lo sobrenatural. Se dice que, todavía en la actualidad, la presencia de Felipe II se percibe en las estancias del monasterio. De hecho, hay quien habla del fantasma del Escorial.

The Monastery of San Lorenzo was built between 1563 and 1584 by Philip II of Spain in El Escorial (Madrid). The building intended to display the supremacy of the Spanish power that was in hands of the Austrians. That was a time when Spain was one of the most important countries, whose power reached the New World. Due to this fact, Philip II ordered to build this imperial building. Its mysteries started even before its construction.
The first one was the location. It is said that those people, commissioned by the king to choose the place of construction, chose an area which was characterized by being focus of attraction for storms and lightnings.
The second enigm was the legend of the black dog. It is said that, during the period of construction, some people observed a black dog walking around the area. Philip II, who was a fervent superstitious, ordered to kill the animal. The legend states that,before passing away, the king mentioned the black dog in his last words.
The third mystery had to do with the dates. The last stone of the monastery was put on 13th September. Some years later, Philip II passed away on 13th September.
Finally, the last mystery is the one concerning to supernatural facts. It is said that, even currently, the presence of Philip II is perceived in the stays of the monastery. In fact, some people talk about the ghost of El Escorial.
